The Concept of Pray/Play

THE CONCEPT OF PRAY/PLAY AND THE CONVO
There is a dialog, an ongoing dialog, that can happen between you and GOD. This dialog, also known as prayer, can occur at anytime, perhaps all the time. If you've ever seen FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, you may remember Tevye, the main character. He had an ongoing dialog with GOD that was part of his everyday routine. He held to the Hebrew mindset which included talking to GOD at various times throughout the day, whenever needed, whenever necessary. Tevye would look up and just start into a casual discussion about whatever was on his mind. I call this vertical expression "the CONVO".

THE CONVO
As a GOD-fearing worshiping artist and musician, I take my vertical talk and spin it into my worship form, beit painting, music, writing or poetry. The chat can go just about anywhere. I've had dialogs that were Bible studies while playing my trumpet. Holy Spirit will speak loudly when you develop the listen skills so you can hear Him.

I've talked to others about this. We were amazed at how the art or music changes. I've done a number of sessions with my friend Willie Garcia, a saxophonist/flautist who has played in my jazz groups over the years. We have come to expect GOD's influence and input into our improvisations. Things like this occur in secular approaches to jazz improvisation, although the temptation is to play things that you have already worked out in advance, the cliches and licks that bind us.

There is an edifying thing that happens whenever we pray/play the sounds that Holy Spirit sings to us. It hits people who are listening, too. The impact of playing these sounds, or Fire Songs, as we like to call them is that healing and the presence of GOD often come with the territory. I will write further about this in the future.

I will be posting soundfiles of these improvised duets and other combinations of jazz worship. Keep checking back for more creative Kingdom playing.
